Waiting for 2012

A big, scary movie about the destruction of the world in 2012 was released this month. Rev. Ellen gives us a comprehensive look at many of the ideas floating around the internet. We know 2012 is the year the Mayan calendar end. What do you think Unity has to say about it?

PS. We are aware that there is music in the background of this recording... it comes and goes. It is on the original recording and could not be removed. However, it is almost appropriate, given the topic and you can still understand the talk, (we hope!).

Rev. Ellen Debeport gave the fourth and last part of a series of talks not often heard in a Unity Church, this one on "Unanswered Prayer". We pray, we affirm, we visualize, we set intentions, and sometimes we outright beg.

Heaven And Hell

Video thumbnail. Click to play

Reverend Ellen gives the third in a four-part series - Taboo Topics of Unity. These are the topics we don’t talk about much in Unity, the ones we left behind in more traditional churches and might have hoped never to hear again. In this series, Rev. Ellen Debenport views the fundamentals of Christianity through a Unity lens and answers how, or even whether, they can be included in our New Thought teachings.

Today's talk is Heaven and Hell. Most of us know that heaven and hell are states of mind, so how can we choose heaven more often? And why is the idea of punishing the wicked still so alluring?

Repent and Be Forgiven

Reverend Ellen gives the second in a four-part series - Taboo Topics of Unity. Today's talk is Repent and Be Forgiven.

Some of us have been wounded or outraged by the teaching that we are miserable sinners who need forgiveness but will be lucky to get it. In fact, forgiveness is something we do for ourselves. And if you still have a physical body, youre not finished forgiving!

Sin and Salvation

This is the first in a four-part series - Taboo Topics of Unity.

Today's talk is about Sin and Salvation.

We may no longer think of ourselves as sinners who should seek salvation, but we are living the process nonetheless. We choose sin or salvation throughout every day -- just not in the way you might think.

No Right or Wrong

Rev. Ellen's talk takes on the problem some have with the Law of Attraction: "You are the creator of your every experience. You get to make it up as you go. There's no right or wrong decision, and there's always a chance to choose again. But does that really help us guide our lives? "

Mind Your Own Business

This is the Sixth Principle, the secret to living a happy life. Most of what we're upset about is none of our business and we can't change it anyway. We can only change ourselves, from within, and that's the key to changing our experience.

"The Tao of Willie"

The Tao of Willie

Willie Nelson wrote a little book with many of the same universal principles we teach in Unity. But they are conveyed in classic Willie style and were accompanied with Willie songs. Our guest singer was Neil Mowles, the music director from Unity Church of Dallas.

Rev. Ellen Debenport's talk reviews four of Willie's songs to demonstrate those principles. Neil's singing was not recorded for technical reasons. The music included was legally obtained and excerpts presented only to illustrate the principles discussed.

Be sure to pick up a copy of Willie's book, The Tao of Willie, in our bookstore!

Unity Principle #5: "Live The Truth!"

Rev. Ellen Debenport presents Principle Five: What are we here to do?
Unity's fifth principles asks us "so, what now?" Knowledge of the first four spiritual principles is not enough. We must live them. What does that look like as we make our way through our day?

Here is what Unity Village Publications says about Rev. Ellen's new book:
A Guide to Practical Spirituality

Ellen Debenport probes the edges of faith in this remarkable book and points the way into the future. The Christian world needs to hear the meassage that she brings for it opens doorways into tomorrow.
--Bishop John Shelby Spong, author of A New Christianity for a New World

The Five Principles was written to provide tools for daily living and suggests answers to the great questions of existence that humans have been asking since the dawn of conscious awareness.

  • What is this greater Presence that we sense around us?
  • Who and what are we?
  • Why do things happen in our lives the way they do?
  • How can we communicate with this Presence?
  • What are we here to do?

  • The five principles constitute the core teachings of the Unity spiritual movement founded in 1889 by Charles and Myrtle Fillmore. These same principles reflect the laws of the universe that apply to everyone, all the time. They show up in every major religion and are all reflected in the teachings of Jesus Christ. The author encourages every reader to "work with these principles, test them, apply them to your life, and watch what happens."

ELLEN DEBENPORT has served as senior minister to Unity churches in Dallas and Wimberley, Texas. Debenport has a bachelor's degree in journalism from Baylor University and worked as a reporter for United Press International and the Sst. Petersburg Times before becoming a minister.

Unity Principle #4: "Aligning With Prayer"

Rev. Ellen Debenport gives her talk on the fourth of Unity's Five Principles, on prayer and meditation. It's one of the ways we remain aware of our Oneness with Source or Spirit. Rev. Ellen says that what most people consider prayer is just elaborate worrying!

Unity Principle #3: "You Create Your Experience"

Principle Three of Unity's five basic principles says we are the creators of our experience.

Now that we know we are divine beings living on earth, we have to learn how to handle all that power!  We create our experience with our thoughts and feelings, knowing that whatever we focus on will expand. Its a big responsibility!  And why would we ever create anything unpleasant?

Unity Principle #2: "You Are God"

This is the second of Rev. Ellen Debenport's five-part series based on her soon to be published book, The Five Principles. The second of Unity's foundational principles is about the divinity of human beings. We are expressions of God on earth, made in the image of God and inherently good. Then why do so many humans behave badly?

    "Giving Birth To Faith"

    Mothers Day, 2009 (May 10th)

Kate Allen, Ph.D. gave the talk today on how children bond with their mothers and how we can bond with God, a process which is very similar in many ways. She talked about how infants learn to get their physical survival needs met and to trust the physical or psychological mother. At some point in life, we go through a similar process to get other important needs met, including our spiritual needs.

    "Drop The Role!"

Reverend Ellen's talk title this Sunday was "Drop the Role". One of the reasons it's hard to live from the Higher Self is that we are so attached to our human roles, personal and professional. What would happen if we dropped the roles we play? Would our lives fall apart?

These videos presentations are an "experiment". If you would like to see them continued, we would appreciate your support. Please consider the following opportunity: https://www.unityofwimberley.com/donate.htm

    "Knowing God's Will"

Reverend Ellen's talk title this Sunday was "Knowing God's Will". Most of us have heard the term "God's will" described as something we are supposed to discover and carry out. But what if God's will is actually our will? Then how do we know when Spirit is speaking and not our own egos? Watch and find a very interesting discussion and meditation.

    "What Now?"`

Reverend Ellen's talk title this Sunday is "What Now?". We've celebrated Easter with the knowledge that each of us is the Christ in expression, but what exactly do we do with that information? How do we live it? The people laughed a lot during this talk... we are sure you will too!

    Absolute Living

    March 15, 2009

Our new minister, Rev. Ellen Debenport, gave today's talk two weeks before her actual, official start. She starts by telling us that the founders of Unity were "absolutists" or people who believe that spiritual laws are in effect all of the time, absolutely! She talked about living our lives in harmony with those laws, not just when we are in trouble, and having the faith to persevere.

We had a much larger group than usual, a testament to the excitement that is building over her impending full-time tenure!

Dare To Believe... In The Impossible!

Rev. Norma Rosado visits and gives this amazing talk, in part from the top of a 10-foot step ladder, right in the sanctuary. We wish we had video, but you will have to imagine arriving at church to see the ladder right in the middle of the stage, wiht a little pink teddy bear sitting at the top.

The ladder is a metaphor of a way that God gives us to get what we want or need when we are not able in ordinary ways. Enjoy the talk!

    Hell In The Hallway

We welcomed Reverend Ellen Debenport as our speaker. Her lesson topic was "Hell in the Hallway." Ellen joined us on Destiny Day Sunday where she got a really good view of what she saw as "a really great church." The board is interviewing Ellen for the position of our temporary minister this weekend.

Rev. Ellen was appointed Senior Minister at Unity Church of Dallas in December 2003 after serving four years as an associate minister. Before she was called to ministry, Ellen was a journalist with United Press International and the St. Petersburg Times, mostly covering politics. She has a bachelor's degree in journalism from Baylor University. She serves on the board at Unity School of Christianity.

Following her guidance, in January of 2008 Ellen moved outside the church to write, speak, and offer her message to a larger audience. Her new book, based on Unity's Five Principles, is due for publication this spring. Ellen is also the host of "Absolute Living" every Monday at 1 pm on www.unity.fm.
